If you own a steakhouse in Houston and want a fully covered outdoor dining area, the company to call is one that can handle the whole job: design, structure, roof, enclosure, heating, lighting, permits and installation. Splitting that work across a carport builder, a shade company and an electrician is how restaurant patios end up late, over budget and uncomfortable. At String Lights Outdoor, we design and build covered dining areas for restaurants from the first sketch to the final inspection.

What “fully covered” should mean for a steakhouse
A steakhouse guest is spending real money on a long dinner. A patio that is too hot, too bright, wet or noisy will not hold that guest for two hours. A fully covered outdoor dining area for a steakhouse usually includes:
- A solid or louvered aluminum roof that keeps out sun and rain. Louvered roofs open for fresh air on nice evenings and close tight when it rains.
- Side protection such as motorized screens, retractable blinds or glass walls, so you can block wind, low sun and mosquitoes.
- Climate control: infrared heaters for cool nights and ceiling fans for Houston summers.
- Lighting built into the structure, from dimmable LED strips to recessed downlights, so the space feels like part of the dining room.
- Drainage that moves water off the roof and away from guests, even in a Gulf Coast downpour.
Why steakhouses choose aluminum pergola systems
Aluminum louvered pergolas have become the standard for upscale restaurant patios. They do not rot, rust or need painting, the powder-coated finish holds up to Houston humidity, and the clean lines suit fine-dining design. Motorized louvers let the manager change the room with a remote or a wall switch, and accessories such as screens, heaters, fans and lighting mount directly into the frame, so the finished space looks built-in rather than added on.
On our project for Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, we combined a motorized louvered roof, polycarbonate side panels, shades, heaters and fans to create a patio the restaurant can use well beyond the usual season. You can see the full story in our Greenwood Village case study.

What to ask any company before you hire them
- Have you built for restaurants before? Ask for commercial references and photos of finished patios, not just backyards.
- Who handles engineering and permits? Commercial structures in Houston and surrounding cities typically need stamped drawings and inspections. Make sure your contractor takes the lead.
- Can you build while we stay open? A good team plans deliveries, noise and work zones around service hours.
- Who services the motors, screens and remotes later? Pick a company with a local team, so a service call does not wait for an out-of-state crew.
- Is the scope complete? Roof, sides, heating, lighting, electrical, drainage and foundations should all be in the proposal, so you are not surprised later.
How the process works with String Lights Outdoor
- Site visit and measurements. We look at your patio, existing building, utilities and how your staff moves through the space.
- 3D design. You see the finished patio, with roof, sides and lighting, before you commit.
- Engineering and permits. We coordinate structural drawings and submittals with the city and your landlord.
- Fabrication. Structures are made to your measurements, and our motorized blinds are manufactured in-house in Texas.
- Installation and inspection. Our crew installs, tests and walks your team through every control.
We have done this for restaurant groups including Morton’s and Del Frisco’s, and for local Houston restaurants such as Katami. Read 6 lessons from building a restaurant patio without closing for what that looks like day to day.
Steakhouse patio FAQ
How much seating can a covered patio add?
It depends on the size of the space and your local code, but a well-designed covered patio often adds a full section of revenue-generating seats that can be used most of the year instead of only on mild days.
Can the patio be used in winter?
Yes. With enclosed sides and infrared heaters, a covered patio can stay comfortable on cool Houston evenings. See what makes an all-season patio enclosure.
Will it need a permit?
In most cases, yes. A commercial covered structure usually needs a permit and inspections. Our commercial pergola permit guide explains what to expect.
Can it match our restaurant’s design?
Yes. Frames come in many powder-coat colors, and lighting, screens and heaters can be chosen to fit your interior and brand.
