Restaurants in Houston need shade that works as hard as the kitchen. Commercial-grade outdoor shade systems are built for daily use, high wind, heavy rain and constant sun, and they need a local installer who can service them fast. String Lights Outdoor designs, manufactures and installs commercial shade systems for restaurants across Houston and Texas, including motorized screens and blinds that we make in-house in Texas.

What makes a shade system “commercial-grade”?
A residential shade sail or a big-box umbrella may look fine on opening day, but restaurant use is different. A commercial-grade system should have:
- Heavy-duty aluminum frames with powder-coat finishes that resist humidity and UV.
- Wind-rated fabrics and tracks. Zipper-track (ZIP) screens hold the fabric in side channels, so it does not flap or pull loose in gusts.
- Quality motors and controls that can run many times a day, with wall switches, remotes and optional wind and sun sensors.
- Engineered structures that are anchored and, where required, permitted and inspected.
- Local service, so a stuck screen on a Friday night is fixed quickly.
Common shade systems for restaurant patios
Motorized louvered pergolas
An aluminum roof with rotating louvers that open for air and light or close for full sun and rain protection. It is the most flexible option for year-round dining. Learn more on our Houston pergola installation page.
Motorized zip screens and blinds
Vertical screens that drop from the pergola or building to block low afternoon sun, wind, light rain and insects. Fabric openness controls how much of the view you keep.
Retractable awnings and canopies
A good choice for sidewalk and storefront seating where a full structure is not possible.
Glass enclosures
Guillotine or sliding glass walls turn a covered patio into a weather-sealed room. See our guillotine glass systems.

How shade pays for itself
Shade is not only about comfort. A patio that guests avoid between noon and sunset is empty square footage. Good shade lets you seat the patio for lunch, happy hour and dinner, reduces glare on tables and screens, and protects furniture from sun damage. Many of our restaurant clients see the patio become one of the most requested sections of the restaurant once it is comfortable.
What to look for in a Houston installer
- Commercial portfolio. Look for restaurant and hospitality work. Our projects include patios for Morton’s, Del Frisco’s and Katami.
- Design and engineering. Ask whether the company provides drawings, wind loads and permit support.
- In-house manufacturing. Local production of screens and blinds means faster lead times and easier replacements.
- Integration. Shade, lighting, heaters and fans should work together on one structure and one control plan.
- Service after install. Make sure there is a local number to call.
Houston weather: what your shade has to handle
Houston restaurants deal with a tough mix: strong sun from late morning to sunset, high humidity, sudden thunderstorms and the occasional tropical system. That combination is hard on cheap fabrics, exposed hardware and low-quality motors. When you compare systems, look for:
- UV-stable, mildew-resistant fabrics that will not fade or stain quickly.
- Sealed or protected motors and cassettes that keep water out.
- Stainless or coated hardware that resists corrosion.
- West- and south-facing protection, where low afternoon sun is strongest during dinner service.
- A drainage plan for roof systems, so heavy rain does not spill onto guests or walkways.
Ask your installer how often the system should be cleaned and inspected. A simple service plan, such as cleaning fabric and checking motors and sensors before summer, keeps shades working during the busiest months and helps them last longer.
Restaurant shade FAQ
Can shade screens handle Houston wind and storms?
Zip-track screens are designed for wind, and wind sensors can raise them automatically. As with any shade, screens should be raised during severe weather.
Can we install while the restaurant stays open?
Usually, yes. We plan work zones and schedules around service. Read how we build patios without closing.
Do shade systems need permits?
Freestanding or attached structures often do, especially for commercial properties. See our commercial permit guide.
How do staff operate them?
With a wall switch, handheld remote or app. We train your team at handover.
