If the remote for your motorized outdoor shade stopped working, start with the simple things: replace the remote battery, make sure the shade has power, check that you are on the right channel, and try the shade from a wall switch if you have one. Most “dead remote” problems are solved by one of these steps. Below is a step-by-step checklist, plus when to call a technician.

Step 1: Check the remote battery
This is the most common cause. Open the remote and replace the battery with a new one of the same type (many use a coin cell such as CR2430 or CR2032). If the remote has an indicator light, it should flash when you press a button. No light usually means a dead battery.
Step 2: Check the channel
Multi-channel remotes control several shades. Make sure the remote is set to the channel for the shade you are trying to move. If an “all” channel works but a single channel does not, the channel may have been changed or lost its pairing.
Step 3: Confirm the shade has power
- Check the breaker and any GFCI outlet near the patio. Outdoor GFCIs often trip after rain.
- If the motor is plugged in, make sure the plug has not come loose.
- For battery or solar motors, the motor itself may need charging. Check the charging port or solar panel.
Step 4: Try another control
If you have a wall switch, a second remote or an app, try it. If those work, the problem is the remote. If nothing works, the problem is more likely power or the motor.
Step 5: Move closer and remove interference
Radio remotes can struggle through walls or metal. Stand close to the shade and try again. New Wi-Fi equipment, metal panels or other radio devices nearby can sometimes cause interference.
Step 6: Check sensors and safety features
A wind sensor may be holding the shade up during gusts, and a sun sensor may override manual commands. An obstacle-detection or overheat feature may also pause the motor for a while after heavy use. Wait a few minutes and try again.

Step 7: Re-pair the remote (with care)
Remotes can lose their pairing after a power outage or battery change. Re-pairing steps depend on the motor brand, and doing them wrong can reset other shades or limits. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your motor, or call us. Our Somfy remote controls page has information on compatible remotes.
When to call a technician
- The motor hums or clicks but the shade does not move.
- The shade stops at the wrong place or goes past its limits.
- The fabric is off its track or wrapped unevenly.
- There is water inside the cassette or motor area.
- Breakers trip repeatedly when the shade runs.
Do not force the fabric by hand or open the motor housing. That can damage the motor or void the warranty.
How to prevent remote problems
A little care helps avoid surprises, especially before summer when you use your shades most:
- Replace remote batteries once a year, or keep a spare on hand.
- Label multi-channel remotes so everyone knows which channel controls which shade.
- Keep the remote indoors and out of direct sun and rain.
- Add a wall switch as a backup control.
- Test outdoor GFCI outlets after big storms.
- Schedule a yearly check of motors, limits, sensors and fabric.
If your system is older or you are adding new shades, ask about upgrading controls. Newer remotes and apps can group shades, set schedules and work with smart-home systems, which makes everyday use simpler.
Shade remote FAQ
Can I buy a replacement remote?
Yes, as long as it is compatible with your motor brand and radio technology. We can help identify the right remote.
Why did my remote stop after a storm?
A power outage, tripped GFCI or wind sensor is the usual cause. Check those first.
Do you service shades installed by another company?
Call us with photos and the motor brand. We service motorized shades across the Houston area and also make replacement shades in-house in Texas.
